It has been very cold here for some time and will be into the future. The Osprey couple seem to be doing okay. This is a picture of them this morning. They were turning the eggs and switching places. Hope the egg(s) are okay too. It is going to be hard to document if they do in fact have eggs #2 and 3. If anybody sees or takes a picture of more than one egg, please let us know.

Well it has been confirmed that our Osprey couple has at least two eggs!!!
The weather tonight is going to be below freezing in Dunedin Florida. Be sure to check on the couple tomorrow morning via live streaming.
By the way, this picture was forwarded from a bird watcher in Finland. http://www.DunedinOspreyCam.com is on many national and international bird watching sites.

Well this is when it gets really interesting watching http://www.DunedinOspreyCam.org
the first egg was laid December 30, 2009, which means the three eggs should begin hatching in early February. If you see that, please let us know!!! The first egg was documented by a Helen in Ohio. Later eggs were documented by a gentleman in Finland. Who will verify the first hatching????

To DunedinOspreyCam Watchers,

All three eggs have hatched!!!! Both parents are doing a fabulous job taking care of the chicks. Daddy goes fishing and mom keeps the chicks warm in this very cool Florida weather.

If you go to the website, DunedinOspreyCam.org keep in mind that only twenty people can go on the camera at at time. If you have trouble getting to the live camera, just keep tapping "live camera" on the menu and you will get on....by the way, some of you might need to clear your caches so that when you go to the website, it is up-to-date.

If you have not seen one of the many press conferences yet, go to http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/news/l ... cam-020310 It was done before the eggs, hatched. Hit the play button. There will be a commercial first, before the newscast.

If you would like to see a slide show of the three chicks being fed this morning, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obMl8CIKeh4 This is a slide show made this morning by a gentleman in Finland who is a member of the Bird Cams Around the World Forum

As most of you know, the osprey chicks are going to be banded Thursday morning.

Barb, do you know the exact time???

I hope someone can take pictures of the bird banding. I am going to Sarasota on a must-take trip.

I know Barb will be at the site and can't take pictures from the webcam. Hopefully someone can so we can post on the site.

I am not advertising the banding because i don't want so many people watching that nobody can get on the camera (because of the 20 people max) to take pictures. Ploughboy and Linda. Could you put the word out to a few select people at your site?

I am so sorry I am going to miss watching it on the webcam!!!!!
thanks, sparky

The Osprey chicks are growing very quickly!!!

The oldest chick is now 38 days old. The chicks will spend more and more time imitating their mother. If she stretches her wings, the chicks will stretch their wings in order to strengthen the flight muscles. The young birds will start flying by the end of the month or the beginning of April. First, they will spend a lot of time hopping on the nest and flapping their wings.

The chicks are a bit more difficult to see now, even though they are larger, because of their camouflage coloring. Notice also that the chicks will now try to eat fish bring rather than just being fed by their parents.

Recently, a biologist and federal bander banded the chicks. The parents were a little bit upset about the activity, but quickly resumed taking care of the young as soon as they were returned to the nest. Some people think that if a human touches a baby bird that it leaves a scent that the parents do not like and that the young will be abandoned. Birds don't have a very good sense of smell; their eyesight is their super power! Ospreys are very good parents and will tend to their young.

The banding was done to learn more about the apparently non-migratory ospreys that we have in this area. Nobody really knows where our birds go in the summer or non-breeding season. Check out the great pictures on the web site under “Banding Ospreys”

A big shout-out to the Dunedin Golf Club Women's League. The ladies had a fund raiser at their recent member-guest tournament and raised a significant amount of money for the OspreyCam. Their generous contribution will be used for educational materials. Birdies and birdies work well together!!! Thank you.

The webcam had over one million hits in February alone

It has been an exciting year for the DunedinOspreyCam!!!

Through the unusually cold Florida winter, the parents got the eggs laid and we all got to watch as they hatched. Unfortunately, only two of the three chicks made it through the cold, wet winter, but the parents did a great job bringing ample fish to the chicks and now both the male and female offspring have fledged and are coming back to the nest less and less.

This project has been successful through the efforts of the city of Dunedin and many volunteers and supporters. We hope all have enjoyed and learned a great deal about the wonderful Ospreys!!!

Seems appropriate to wrap up with one last picture. One of the fledglings recently decided to check out the camera. He seems to be looking back at us to see all of the people who have been watching the Dunedin Ospreys all season…
